Date: February 1st!!!
Location: a four story (two really, but it has an attic and
basement), three bedroom, 1.5 bath home with wood accents and a fireplace that
doesn’t work. Drink: bud light lime. We should be drinking the many bottles of
free wine the last tenants left us, but it’s homemade and seems to have turned
to vinegar while sitting in the dreary basement over the last 8 months.
Let’s describe this scene to you, then we can compare to

In the past nine months, we have slept in a dorm with 16
other outdoor leaders, in tents, in sailboats, disguised as cocooned moths in a
soccer goal, in a cemetery, wrapped in a tarp in the mountains of Utah, on a
dog bed, in a tent in the backyard of a sorority, on the ground next to a fire,
in a Hard Rock Hotel, in hammocks in a cow pasture, on a carpet floor in
Portland, on a really tiny couch in San Francisco, on a pullout couch in a
stranger’s living room, in the car at a rest stop, in the car in a field, in
the car in a Taqueria parking lot, and once in a motel because it was too cold
to camp.
It’s weird when you can’t fit anything else in the car so
you don’t even look at any things but then once you have a house you look at
all the things as things with potential uses. Trash is not trash, trash is…A chair.
Table. Living room set. Also, the
point of this is that we furnished our ENTIRE house for $200 dollars. Yes, it’s
true. Lets break it down.

(left be previous tenants, found, or acquired along the way) and their
estimated “value” based on prices we’ve seen at Goodwill:

Basically furnishing a house is expensive and we won.
